The Orientation session at Luxury Connect Business School

As the first step of our journey at Luxury connect business school, there was a proficient induction programme spread over three days. It was designed especially for students like us who are at the doorstep of luxury industry. We not only learnt about the emerging trends in different luxury sectors and consumers but we also got a chance to glimpse into the  life of industry professionals. With the aim to go beyond the classroom learning and widen the students' perspective of  luxury sector We were taken to DLF Emporio mall where we were warmly welcomed by the staff of brands such as Christian Dior, Louis Vuitton, Cornelliani, Armani junior amongst others. Each one of them took us through the journey of the brand, explained about the merchandise and the customers base. Everyone we met there were very dynamic and enthusiastic about their work. It was very interesting to learn about the heritage and culture of different brands. It was great to connect ourselves with experienced professionals of luxury industry and already feel like a part of it.

We also had the pleasure to meet some of the alumni of previous batch. While sharing their experience of studying at  LCBS, each of them stressed the fact that because of the efficient learning and guidance that they received from LCBS they are well placed with very well know luxury brands and are very confident of doing well in their careers

Finally, we had the pleasure to have amongst us two of very talented pioneers of the industry wo doing very well in their sectors-Mr. Rolf Blaser, who is the country manager of SAFILO India Pvt. Ltd.; and Ms.  Nalini Gupta, Ex Country Manager of Burberry India. They gave core insights of emerging conditions in Luxury sector and also shared their journey of becoming successful managers. It was very wonderful to have both of them with us in a very interactive session.

In a nutshell, I would like to say that the induction programme helped us in getting a true picture of luxury sector.

PGDLM 2016

When Career and Passion Come Together!

“In order to attain Luxury, first learn how to manage it” ~ LCBS

Having completed my MBA in Media and Communication alongside with a PGDLM in Advertising & branding, I worked for a year and a half in a syndication firm, effectively included in selling of content and went about as a CRM Executive.  A research project on Burberry and my love for branding set off my enthusiasm in the Luxury Sector. After researching and going through many colleges, I settled on my decision and chose Luxury Connect Business School, the first and only Luxury Boutique School, and enrolled myself for a PGDLM in Luxury Brand Management in association with International University of Monaco. Like everyone, I had my apprehensions about enrolling in a college that started its operations in the year 2013 and was worried about the placement opportunities, but one look at the team heading the Institute, and I was convinced that I was in safe hands. The founder and CEO of the college, Mr. Abhay Gupta, is acknowledged as an industry leader by Forbes, Economic Times, CNN-IBN, NDTV, Hindustan times and Awarded as the ‘Luxury retail icon of the year 2012′ by Asia retail congress. He helped not only bring but establish luxury brands like Versace, Versace Home, Versace Collection, Corneliani, etc in India.

On the 17th August, dressed in formals, I made my way to LCBS. To be honest, I have always enjoyed being a student and was excited to start my journey and interact with the faculty and my fellow classmates. The faculty and the staff welcomed us with utmost warmth and arranged ice-breaker sessions for us well. It was intimidating to have people standing in front of you with 25 years of experience behind them and realize that they have had worked with some of the best of the Luxury Brands, yet it was incredible to see them acting so modest and amicable. Whatever little qualms I had in my mind, soon vanished after we had a brief session with the alumni, who are successfully placed in different Industries in the Luxury Sector.

Day 2 of the induction and I find myself standing in the Dior store interacting with store manager! As a part of our Industry visit, we visited DLF Emporio and made visits to Dior, Louis Vuitton, Michael Kors, Armani Junior and Corneliani. The college had arranged for a personal visit to these stores to get hands on experience on the extravagance luxury retail market, know the brand history, and study the store design along with the products displayed. In spite of me hailing from Bombay, it was overwhelming to interact with the store managers and get the vibe of luxury brands. No more we were the customers, but aspiring Luxury Professionals! Right from the mall entry to the whole ambience and the personnel at this Luxury Retail Mall, I was awe-struck! My favorite brand visit would be Dior, a brand that has strongly imbibed its rich culture heritage in the store design and its products. Special mention for the extremely humble and courteous manager at Dior, who made sure we were comfortable and gave us a well guided tour across the store. Oh! Did I mention that I got the chance to pose with the classic Dior bag worth Rupees 2.7 lac! ;) (Perks of the course). It was now clear to me that this Industry demands you to be passionate, creative and innovative! The right attitude and knowledge will always take you a step ahead. On the 3rd day, we had the Industry people visit us. Mr. Rolf Blaser, the country head of Safilo, India, shared insights about the company that is the second largest manufacturer of sunglasses and frames for most of the leading fashion luxury brands. Followed by the enriching session, we had the ex-country head of Burberry, Miss Nalini Gupta guiding us through the nuances of Luxury Industry and sharing her profound experiences at Burberry.

The three days of Induction and Introduction to the course evolved me from a mere information gatherer to a knowledge absorber. I am happy to be a part of a school that is fun, interactive and promotes experiential learning alongside great exposure! All geared up to start my journey and be a part of a world beyond ordinary! Closing off with a quote from one of my favorite Luxury brand;

“The best things in life are free. The second best are expensive.” ~ Coco Chanel

Enter The Entrepreneurship

India - The country which was struggling from the problem of Un-employment is now experiencing a new wave of start-ups.

Start up’s everywhere – from technology to food to fashion to grocery…..you can see young graduates armed with a laptop operating - from nowhere – zero capital investments and they are on….

The start-up wave in India is formed by a soaring high number of young-generation who is full of idea and new things in mind. India has the third highest number of start-ups in the world (an estimated 4200-4400 : as per a report by the country’s software lobby group Nasscom and Zinnov Consulting) Only the US and the UK have more than this.
Most of the founders – almost three out of every four – are under the age of 35, although in keeping with the poor track record of the technology space in terms of gender balance, only 9% of the founders (and co-founders) are women.

It is possible that India will overtake the UK in terms of number of start-ups (the UK has 4500-5000) next year. The US is far ahead (47,000-48,000). More than 65% of the start-ups are located in Bangalore, Mumbai, and Delhi and its environs. (Live Mint reports)
BUT, The number of failed startup is  also very high in India.
Around 80% start-ups fails in the first three years !

So what is causing that specific and high number of failures  ??
Is it the Idea..?
Is it the team..?
Is it the management..?
No, It's the mind set training which is missing.
The wave is there but that wave is not reaching to the shore. It is because the ripple is not properly contained and taken forward.

One needs to learn the art of riding these waves by professional surfers So their experiences can make you ride and take your ambition forward Even through stony ways.

The young millennial is too impatient to wait and to get the experience required to build a successful business but he is ready to learn that experience from a experienced mentor.

The New Age Management

Hear  the word ‘management’ and the first thing that comes to our minds is ‘MBA’ !
In the recent past, the two words Management & MBA have become synonyms. It’s like what ‘photocopy’ Is to ‘Zerox’ & what ‘Taj Mahal’ is to India !
MBA’s are the most visible commodity today. But what does one really learn while doing a MBA still remains a big question mark ?

Traditionally, in India the basics of learning management were based on ‘Arthshastra’  & ‘Panchtantra .  Books were written to guide Princes to rule(read ‘manage’) their kingdoms . Indians believed and  learned from the experiential leanings and by  SAGES or GURU’s, who were  known to things by way of their meditation, wisdom & deep belief in nature and sense of observations.

And then the British arrived into India….
Soon, they realised that in order to really rule this vast nation, they needed to damage the back bone of the education system &  the "The Indian Way" of management.
Lord Macaulay addressed The British Parliament with this statement On 02/02/1835 " I have traveled across the length and breadth of India and I have not a seen a person who is beggar, who is a thief Such wealth I have seen I this country, Such high moral values, people with such High caliber. That I do not think that we would ever conquer this country  Unless we break the very backbone of this nation. Which is her spiritual and cultural heritage and therefore "I purpose that we replace her old and ancient education system, her culture or if the Indians think that all that is foreign and English is good and greater than their own"  They will lose their self-esteem, their native -culture and they will become what we want them to be , A Truly Dominated nation."

But, what's now .?
How one can see and form organizational management with strategic points taken care  for a futuristic approach ?
is this not the time to go back to our basics & roots to see what we can actually learn and adopt from our history ? Can we not change the course of future by picking the best from our past ?.
What if the books come with no experience and thoughts are just some facts and methods being carried by authors over the years.

The   challenge is that everyone needs to learn management but how and from where..?
Only the managed can make you learn management Or we would say management is more than learning - it's a way of like.
The jobs & the education  - everything is done to get things we always dreamt of  or desired in life.
It Could be the Lamborghini, or it could be that penthouse, and or every other comfort that luxury provides.

So, why not we start with managing Luxury so that we can easily achieve what we wanted ?.
The new age management is ‘Luxury management’ because that gives you the highest level of excellence required to live a life King size.
Live the fast life – live the glamorous life – manage the swish set – and hobnob with the best few.

Choose to Study ‘Luxury Brand management’ over a any other normal ‘Management’.
Specialise – live up and achieve what the others can’t even think of !

MBA In International Luxury Brand Management Courses

Luxury is an ever elusive feeling of comfort and pleasure. Of processing something superior to others, it is processing something beyond the barrier of your own desire. The desire to look different, to be above others. It gives the feeling of comfort, physical and mental, up and above your satisfaction. As such luxury has no upper limit; you also do not know your limit of luxury. I said luxury is ever elusive because what is a luxury for you today is not tomorrow. Luxury is the product of the dream of the artist, technicians, supported by the dream monger   entrepreneurs. It is a myth that luxury is related to high cost. Luxury is only a class apart. Even within the accepted boundary of luxury we can witness pockets of luxury considered super to others. e.g. take the case of air travel, it is a luxury for most people, at least in developing countries; but for a person travelling by air in economy class, travelling in business class is a luxury. Yes, we can say luxury is class dependant and is embraced by the few in that class, who could afford and also has the flying desire to move up the social ladder at any cost. These are the people who lift the standard of life whenever they get the chance. Luxury business flourishes when income increases, this means when the mass has surplus income.
